The prayer room at the Foreign Crew Rest Center at Fuji Fishing Port in New Taipei City was officially opened on October 9. The opening ceremony was hosted by the Jinshan District Fishermen’s Association and attended by the representatives from the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office to Taipei, the New Taipei City Government, the National Fishermen’s Association of the Republic of China, and other relevant organizations.
The Fisheries Agency stated that through collaboration among the central government, local governments, and fishermen’s associations, onshore living and recreational facilities at fishing ports are being progressively improved to provide migrant fishers who have traveled far to work in Taiwan’s fishing industry with suitable spaces for religious observance and relaxation during their time off.
Unveiling Ceremony and Fellowship Highlight Commitment to Foreign Crew Members’ Well-being
During the inauguration ceremony, distinguished guests jointly unveiled the plaque, and the Jinshan District Fishermen’s Association formally handed over the keys to the prayer room, marking its official opening for use. A traditional blessing ceremony was held following the unveiling, and promotional gifts and a variety of food were provided for attendees. The event also offered an opportunity for participants to interact and connect, demonstrating the care and commitment of various sectors to improving the well-being of foreign crew members.
Enhancing Fishing Port Facilities to Improve Living Conditions for Migrant Fishers
According to the Fisheries Agency, approximately 108 migrant fishers currently work at Fuji Fishing Port, including 104 Indonesian nationals. In 2025, when the Jinshan District Fishermen’s Association established a new fishermen’s rest center at Fuji Fishing Port, a prayer room and washroom for migrant fishers were incorporated into the first-floor facilities. The Fisheries Agency provided NT$790,000 in subsidies to support the establishment and maintenance of these facilities. Following the opening of the prayer room, the Agency provided a total of NT$260,000 in subsidies to the Jinshan District Fishermen’s Association in 2026 for the maintenance of one prayer room and two washroom facilities for migrant fishers at Huanggang and Fuji Fishing Ports.
The Fisheries Agency emphasized that safeguarding the well-being of migrant fishers is a key component of the Action Plan for Fisheries and Human Rights. To date, 45 washroom facilities and 18 rest facilities, including prayer rooms, have been established at fishing ports across Taiwan for migrant fishers. The Agency will continue to work with local governments and fishermen’s associations to improve onshore living and recreational facilities at fishing ports, promote the sustainable development of the fishing industry, and safeguard the human rights of migrant fishers. These efforts aim to ensure that fishers working in Taiwan are treated with dignity and respect and have access to appropriate facilities to meet their daily needs.
